Find Your Way Online

Activity #1
  1. Go to the Destiny Home page and log into your account.
  2. Conduct a title search in the catalog for a book titled Find Your Way Online. It is an eBook.
  3. While looking at the catalog record for this eBook, find the link in the right sidebar to READ ONLINE. It is VERY important that you choose READ ONLINE rather than one of the other choices.
  4. Read Chapter 1, "Starting Your Search".
  5. After reading Chapter 1, click on the DISCUSSION tab above and click NEW POST. Choose three terms from the list below. In your post, define your three chosen terms in your own words and explain their importance in conducting online searches.

Activity #2

  1. Return to the eBook Find Your Way Online. You may review the procedures for accessing this eBook in Activity #1 above. Remember to choose READ ONLINE to open the book.
  2. Briefly review chapter 1, “Starting Your Search” and your discussion post in response to that chapter.
  3. Read chapter 2, “Narrowing Your Search.”
  4. Conduct the search in Google that is described in this chapter.
  5. Discuss your search and results in a discussion post. The subject of your discussion post should be “Narrowing Your Search.” Be sure that the discussion post is in the “Find Your Way Online” section of the wiki.



Activity #3
  1. Return to the eBook Find Your Way Online. You may review the procedures for accessing this eBook in Activity #1 above. Remember to choose READ ONLINE to open the book.
  2. Read chapter 3, “Subject Directories: Part 1 Drilling Down” and follow the directions discussed in the Try This! activities on pages 17 and 19.
  3. Title the subject line of your discussion post “Drilling Down”. Your discussion post will have 2 paragraphs:
  • In paragraph one, discuss your observations of subject directories and how they are organized.
  • In paragraph two, explain why the author of this book chose “Drilling Down” as a title for the chapter on subject directories.


Activity #4

  1. Return to the eBook Find Your Way Online. You may review the procedures for accessing this eBook in Activity #1 above. Remember to choose READ ONLINE to open the book.
  2. Read chapter 4, “Subject Directories: Part 2 Using Key Words” and follow the directions discussed in the Try This! activity on pages 21 and 22.
  3. Title the subject line of your discussion post “Using Key Words”. Discuss your experiences and answer the questions discussed in the Try This! activity. (minimum of 30 words). Links for the subject directories are below. Choose one for the activity:

  1. Return to the ebook Find Your Way Online. You may review the procedures for accessing this eBook in Activity #1 above. Remember to choose READ ONLINE to open the book.
  2. Read chapter 5, "Using a Subscription Database." It begins on page 23.
  3. After reading chapter 5, compose a discussion post. Use the chapter title as your subject line. In your discussion post, discuss the advantages and disadvantages of using a subscription database instead of the internet for research (minimum of 30 words).
